Yes, I know I've posted in the wrong place and somewhat early Twisted Evil

After our rather fun excursion over Breydon in a Freeman Flotilla there have been some rumblings about a tidal Thames event. This sounds like all sorts of fun to me, so I'm trying to gauge interest in advance. We have a member that exclusively uses her 23 on the tidal Thames, so it's not only for larger boats.

Yes/No/You're haveing a giraffe/experiences, all welcome below Smile

Count me in.... I need an excuse to blast round to the Thames.....

Just make sure the dates are in the middle of the school holidays.....  It will take me a week to get there ....  oh and a week to get back!!!    It would be nice to be able to run all the way up to Oxford too.....

Sometime early August is a good time....

Any thoughts about where? the trip down is something we definitely want to do as Mick lives in Sarfend, are you thinking locked marina or floating pontoon facilities

Could you do the Oxford stage first, cruise down picking up boats on the way.....say second week of August?
F1 has a two week out of three week shutdown in August, we usually take the second and third week of the month. It's a bit limiting

I think the tidal floating pontoons would probably be a very scary experience in any Freeman.

Hello, Hello, Happy Saturday, I'm on the tidal Thames in my Freeman 23 how can I help? Would be great to have a freeman tidal Thames meet. We moor at Brentford marina and sometimes overnight on a floating pontoon. In our area mooring is definitely not easy especially for groups... Maybe its a bit easier through the other side of Teddington lock?? Must admit I've not been that direction!

How far down do you typically get in a day Olive? I know I've seen pics of the barrier and various bridges from you boat. Where do you overnight?

We leave from Brentford in the morning, usually from the floating pontoon outside Brentford marina then we sail until the tide turns, with an early start this is on the other side of the Barrier, furthest is Dartford, usually we turn before the Dartford Crossing and head back. We overnight back at Brentford. Mooring is not easy to find.

Also, if you're going through the Barrier, you're supposed to radio or phone ahead, maybe everyone knows that but I didn't at first! Anyway they will tell you which 'entry' to go through as there are usually a few available

From my marina (Brentford) we can go for a short trip towards Teddington Lock, passing Richmond and Eel Pie Island (very peaceful and lovely). Or we go the other direction, passing 'the sights' like London Eye and Tower Bridge etc which is exciting but also always very choppy around Waterloo Bridge especially, and busy with river traffic so can be a bit scary (well for me anyway!)

Suddenly just thought, there is a cruising club at Brentford and they overnighted at Limehouse Marina. The way the club works is that they team up and all travel together on a few boats, which is why we didn't join. So might not work if there's lots of boats but maybe worth investigating??

Olive, even if she doesn't realise, is quite a heroine -  in my book! Through the Thames barrier in a small single-engined boat with no more thought (perhaps not) about it than I give to popping down to Staines. What a lot of woossies we are on the Upper River!
That's serious stuff, thinking about the tides, and needing to have your wits about you and less wine.

I was thinking St Kats (if they'd take us) and back the next day, but looking at the tide times for August period, we might be better off going part way down (Chelsea or Chiswick harbour?) down to the barrier (2 hours or so), then a big day back up to the safety of teddington (5 hours or so) .... too much Question

Really?! *blushes Smile you guys Smile

St Kats is lovely, I've not moored there but I used to live nearby. Have you considered Surrey Quays or Greenland, might be cheaper? South of the river though and less touristy.

Takes us 2 hours from Brentford to Limehouse, so would take you a bit longer to get to the Barrier/Teddington I think. We don't go any great speed ourselves though admittedly.

I think Limehouse might be a stretch, unless we make a very early start

Well if we're looking for adventure??????  Spoken to Conrad who is heavily involved with various marine projects, Northfleet Harbour restoration. Gravesend town pier and crayford creeks, It may take a bit of organisation, but it should be feasible. Leave Teddington 2 hours before high water, cruise in company (for safety) and hammer down through the port of London, the image of a dozen or so Freeman cruisers in convoy past Houses of parliament sends a shiver, overnight at Gravesend pier, when you consider that paddington cruising club have done that trip in narrow boats I'm guessing we could. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1500883473564503/
I thought you had to have VHF to transit the barrier but according to Olive you can phone. We have VHF on Stravaigin and Mick and I are licensed so we could perhaps book through as a squadron. Actually getting quite excited Very Happy

I've put a couple of Conrads pics up on facebook photo page, he's seen a dozen narrow boats rafted there so sure we could all fit, there are also buoys available if we really had a crowd. Dont think it would be a barbecue format, but a dinner party on a raft might work, vats of chilli and a goodly quantity of beer. Might need to borrow some of the fenders off the bloke in beccles, I'm thinking boats cruising down could offer rides to club members from other waters although sleeping berths may be limited

Leave Teddington at 13.22 high tide 15.22, then run out on the ebb Sat 25th August 2018  looks like the best bet, taking into account Deanos wishes,
